IIn response to the opinion from the profession, the eligibility of contestants for the 5th Chinese University Journalism Award has been relaxed. The requirements on the age of participants, previously set at a maximum of 45, and the minimum working experience of 3 years have been removed to encourage the participation of more journalists to allow outstanding news works to be praised. It was hoped that winners would build on their success and continue to employ their professionalism in monitoring society.
“There are many investigative report series among the award-winning works of this year. Journalists have employed their sharp sense of observation to dig out information in difficult situations and undergo detailed and in-depth analysis to expose social problems. They showed a very high level of professionalism, while duly performing the proper social function of the media. The winners are all well deserved of the awards. At the same time, the results also reflect the high demand and the recognition of quality news report among the experienced journalists and management of the journalism profession in our panel of judges, as well as the achievements of the profession,” Cheung Wang Yim Lavender, Chairperson of the 5th Chinese University Journalism Award Organizing Committee, said.
“The award-winning works also involve a wide range of issues, covering local economic, political and social areas which were greatly concerned by the Hong Kong people, having huge social impacts. There are also works reporting social phenomena in the mainland and nearby countries, reflecting the increasingly close relationship between Hong Kong and the Mainland as well as Hong Kong’s status as an Asian World City.”
As the Guest of Honour of the Ceremony, the Chief Executive Mr. Donald Tsang expressed that he would like to encourage in person the award-winners to continue their endeavour to provide more objective and in-depth reports to people.
The Chinese University Journalism Award aims to promote professional practices in journalism in Hong Kong through recognizing the contributions of distinguished journalists. The 10 awards divided into five groups, namely News Group (Print Media), Feature & Commentary Group (Print Media), News Group (TV), Feature & Commentary Group (TV) categories, and News / Feature & Commentary Group (Radio). For each of the groups, there is a Grand Award and a Merit Award. Nine journalists won the awards this year, and one of them is the recipient of two awards.
