Exchange Life in Brighton, UK

Janica Bergas (Year 2, Global Communication)

The first thing that comes to mind when people think about England is the weather. Cold, gloomy weather that the sun shies away from. Because of the weather, the English are known for being unfriendly and apathetic. Or so they say.

Brighton was not like that.

The locals in Brighton were very cheerful and welcomed me with friendly smiles and words of encouragement as I settled in during my exchange. The little town of Brighton was absolutely lovely, full of unique and quirky shops and places at every corner that one would never get tired discovering.

The famous Brighton beach and pier was very close to campus and would often serve as a safe haven where one could breathe in fresh air and relax, especially during stressful months as a university student.

I’ve met so many people from all over the world in only a matter of months and despite the bi-polar weather, may it be rainy and stormy or sunny and bright, the people that I’ve met have managed to keep the cheery smiles on their faces.

Experiencing an environment so different from Hong Kong – both culture and ambiance – has opened my mind to so many things and allowed me to experience a whole new world outside from home. It has allowed me to grow as a student and, more importantly, as a person.
