Varsity 25th Anniversary Discussion: Telling Hong Kong Stories

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Varsity, we invited some fellow storytellers to our “Telling Hong Kong Stories” panel discussion on April 27 to discuss the challenges and opportunities of telling local stories in English.

Since our last panel discussion five years ago, we have seen a fresh wave of efforts by young people to tell their own Hong Kong stories in English, especially online. The Umbrella Movement in 2014 brought international attention to Hong Kong for a short period of time. The challenge now is to keep that attention by continuing to produce interesting and fresh stories geared for an international audience, stories that address the more complex nuances of Hong Kong society.

Our panellists include: Holmes Chan, associate editor for independent magazine Still/Loud; Karen Cheung, reporter for the Hong Kong Free Press; Oiwan Lam, the Northeast Asia regional editor at Global Voices online and a founder of In-Media HK; Alan Wong, editor at Inkstone, a unit of the South China Morning Post that provides China-focused news stories; and Brian Fong, a political scholar leading the work of several civil society organisations.

For highlights of the discussion, head to our live-blog coverage here. You can also replay the livestream here.
